Cobb at a glance

What should Cobb students know about the county?

Cobb County was one of ten northwest Georgia counties formed from Cherokee lands in 1832 and is named for Thomas Willis Cobb. Marietta was settled in 1833 and became the county seat in 1834. County history records the founding of several towns students will recognize: Springville, later Powder Springs, in 1838; Acworth, chartered in 1860; Smyrna, incorporated in 1872; Austell, chartered in 1885; and Big Shanty, chartered as Kennesaw in 1887. Mableton became a city in 2023.

For a student, the useful takeaway is that Cobb is a county of several established cities, each with its own city government, rather than one town, so the city guides treat each place separately. Historic sites such as Kennesaw Mountain, performing arts venues such as the Cobb Energy Performing Arts Centre, campuses and retail districts are settings where access control, patrol and event skills can apply.

Getting to class

How do Cobb students reach the Duluth classroom?

Duluth is on the northeast side of the metro, and Cobb is on the northwest side. The Academy does not quote a travel estimate for Cobb. Open live directions from your own address at the hour you would leave, compare that with the session hours listed in Bookeo, and plan to arrive early on the first day.

Some Cobb addresses carry a city name without being inside city limits, and Mableton's boundaries are new. The city guides describe each place on its own terms rather than treating all of Cobb as one area.

Local work

Where do Cobb County security officers work?

Cobb's universities, hospitals, retail corridors, apartment communities, construction sites and performing arts venues are settings where patrol, access control and reporting skills can be required, and some licensed employers staff armed posts. These examples describe settings, not actual staffing, job offers or placements, and training does not guarantee employment.

Private Eye Protection's own guard pages describe security guards in Marietta, patrol security in Kennesaw and construction site security. Return to the Georgia security guard training guide for state rules, or compare Gwinnett County training and Fulton County training.

Cobb County FAQ

Cobb County security guard training questions

Still have a question? Call the Academy at 678-878-3152.

Q01Is there an Academy classroom in Cobb County?

No. The only classroom is in Duluth, at 3250 Peachtree Industrial Blvd, Ste 201, in Gwinnett County. Cobb students attend there. The Armed course includes live-fire range qualification, and range details appear on the Bookeo listing for each date, so read that listing before you place the $100 deposit for a seat.

Q02Is the trip from Cobb to Duluth practical for a class schedule?

It depends on where in Cobb you start and when you leave, so the Academy does not publish one estimate. Check live directions from your address at the hour you would head to class and compare with the session hours in Bookeo. If timing decides it, call 678-878-3152 on a weekday before booking.

Q03What security work is common in Cobb County?

Settings in Cobb where security skills can apply include campuses and hospitals, retail corridors, apartment and HOA communities, construction sites and performance venues. Some licensed employers staff armed posts. These are examples of settings, not openings. Training does not guarantee a job, and Private Eye Protection hires separately through its own application.

Q04Which Cobb cities have their own training guide?

The Academy publishes guides for Acworth, Austell, Kennesaw, Mableton, Marietta, Powder Springs and Smyrna. Each guide explains how students from that city plan the trip to Duluth and what kinds of local security work exist. Every guide is linked from this Cobb County page, along with the main training hub.

Q05What does the Unarmed course cover for Cobb students?

The 24-hour Unarmed course covers patrol and observation, emergency response, legal authority and use of force, access control and report writing. It includes American Red Cross First Aid/CPR/AED certification and costs $250, with $100 paid as a deposit and $150 due at class. Successful completion earns a Certificate of Completion.

Q06Does completing a course make me a licensed officer?

No. Course completion provides training documents but does not automatically grant a license. Armed registration in Georgia is tied to a licensed employer and requires the officer to be at least 21. The State of Georgia makes all licensing determinations, so confirm the remaining steps with the Board or your employer.
