Gwinnett at a glance

What should Gwinnett students know about the county?

Gwinnett County was created by the state legislature in 1818 and is named for Button Gwinnett, a signer of the Declaration of Independence. Lawrenceville is the county seat, and the county government lists 17 municipalities, from Auburn and Berkeley Lake to Sugar Hill and Suwanee. Most residents live in unincorporated areas, including the community of Centerville, so many students will search by a city name even when their address is unincorporated Gwinnett.

The county describes itself as a gateway to metro Atlanta from the north and northeast via I-85 and I-985, with GA Highway 316 running toward Athens. It borders Barrow, DeKalb, Forsyth, Fulton, Hall, Jackson, Rockdale and Walton counties. For students, that matters because interstate corridors, distribution space, retail centers and large residential communities are the kinds of settings where security skills such as logging activity, controlling access and writing clear reports can be required.

Getting to class

How do Gwinnett students get to the Duluth classroom?

Duluth is a Gwinnett city, and the classroom is on Peachtree Industrial Blvd. Students from western Gwinnett cities such as Berkeley Lake, Norcross and Peachtree Corners usually approach along the Peachtree Industrial corridor, while students from the eastern side of the county, including Grayson, Snellville and Loganville, cross the county on local arterials or the interstate. We do not publish drive times. Open the live directions link from your own address at the hour you would leave.

Loganville is split between Gwinnett and Walton counties, and Buford extends into Hall County. The city guides for those places explain the boundary rather than treating each city as entirely inside Gwinnett.

Local work

Where do Gwinnett security officers work?

Gwinnett's logistics space, retail centers, apartment communities, schools and event venues are settings where unarmed skills such as access control, patrol and front desk coverage can be used, and some licensed employers staff armed posts. These descriptions explain the kinds of settings, not actual openings or staffing levels. They are not job offers, and training does not guarantee employment.

Private Eye Protection's own guard pages describe warehouse and distribution security, apartment community patrols and guard services in Norcross. Return to the Georgia security guard training guide for state rules, or compare Fulton County training and Cobb County training.

Gwinnett County FAQ

Gwinnett County security guard training questions

Still have a question? Call the Academy at 678-878-3152.

Q01Is the Academy classroom in Gwinnett County?

Yes. Classes meet at 3250 Peachtree Industrial Blvd, Ste 201, in Duluth, which is one of Gwinnett County's 17 municipalities. Gwinnett students attend the same Unarmed, Armed and Complete courses as everyone else. Range details for the Armed course are shown on the Bookeo listing for each date, so check there before you book.

Q02I live in unincorporated Gwinnett. Which page should I read?

Read the guide for the city closest to your address, or use this county page. Gwinnett's government notes that most residents live outside city limits, so a Centerville or unincorporated Lawrenceville address is common. Whatever your address, training is held in Duluth and the course prices, deposit and schedule are the same.

Q03What kinds of security posts are common in Gwinnett?

Settings where these skills can apply include warehouse gates and dock logs along the interstate corridors, retail and shopping center patrols, apartment and HOA access control, and school and event coverage; some licensed employers staff armed posts. These are examples of settings, not openings. Training does not guarantee a job, and Private Eye Protection hires through its own application.

Q04Which Gwinnett cities have their own training guide?

The Academy publishes guides for Berkeley Lake, Buford, Dacula, Duluth, Grayson, Lawrenceville, Lilburn, Loganville, Norcross, Peachtree Corners, Snellville, Sugar Hill and Suwanee. Each guide covers how students from that city plan the trip to Duluth and what kinds of security work exist nearby. All guides are linked from this page.

Q05Can Gwinnett students take the Complete Package?

Yes. The Complete Package combines the 24-hour Unarmed and 16-hour Armed courses into 40 hours for $550, which is $75 less than booking them separately. It includes American Red Cross First Aid/CPR/AED certification. The armed portion requires you to be 21 or older under Georgia rules.

Q06How do I hold a seat from Gwinnett?

Open Bookeo from any Register button, choose a course and date, and pay the $100 non-refundable deposit. Bookeo emails a confirmation, and you pay the remaining balance when you attend in Duluth. If a date is hard to judge against your commute, call 678-878-3152 on a weekday before you book.
