Georgia basics

What does Georgia require before you work security?

Georgia sets training standards for security officers through the Georgia Board of Private Detective and Security Agencies, part of the Secretary of State's Professional Licensing Boards Division. Board Rule 509-3-.02 describes the basic training curriculum for security officers, and the Board's published guidance treats 24 classroom hours as the minimum for basic security officer training. That 24-hour figure is why the Academy's Unarmed course runs 24 hours.

Unarmed officers are not registered with the Board the way armed officers are, but the Secretary of State's FAQ says they must still be trained to Board standards. Armed work is different. An armed security officer must be at least 21, complete firearms training and qualification, and hold registration that is tied to a licensed employer. In plain terms, finishing a course gives you training documents; it does not hand you a license, and it does not hire you.

The State of Georgia makes all licensing determinations. If you have a question about your own eligibility, read the Secretary of State FAQ linked on this page or ask the Board directly before you pay a deposit.

Read the Georgia Secretary of State security agency FAQ and Board Rule chapter 509-3 for the official wording.

Choosing a course

Which security training course fits your goal?

The Unarmed course is designed for people new to security and for those preparing for posts such as access control, front desk, patrol or event work. It covers patrol and observation, emergency response, legal authority and use of force, access control and report writing, and it includes American Red Cross First Aid/CPR/AED certification. Successful completion earns a Certificate of Completion.

Pick the Armed course if you already meet the age requirement and plan to work an armed post. It is firearms-focused: safety and handling, Georgia firearms law, weapon retention and live-fire range qualification. The Armed course does not include First Aid/CPR/AED.

The Complete Package combines both courses in one enrollment for $550 instead of $625 booked separately, a $75 difference. It suits students who want both sets of documents and the First Aid/CPR/AED certification without managing two registrations.

Training location

Where are Academy classes held?

Classroom sessions meet at 3250 Peachtree Industrial Blvd, Ste 201, Duluth, GA 30096, in Gwinnett County. There is no satellite classroom in other cities, so the city and county guides on this site focus on how students from each area plan the trip, not on a local office.

The Armed course includes live-fire range qualification. Range details are shown on the Bookeo listing for each date, so check that listing before you book rather than assuming the range is at the classroom address.

Private Eye Protection, the Academy's parent company, also provides security guard services across metro Atlanta. Its guard services and hiring are separate from the Academy, and completing a course does not guarantee a job with the company.

Private Eye Protection's guard teams are described on the Atlanta security guard services page, and job seekers can read about careers with Private Eye Protection. General company questions are answered in the company FAQ, and you can learn who runs Private Eye Protection.

Training FAQ

Georgia security guard training questions

Still have a question? Call the Academy at 678-878-3152.

Q01How many hours of training does Georgia require for a security officer?

Georgia's basic security officer training is a minimum of 24 classroom hours under the Board's rules, which is why the Academy's Unarmed course is 24 hours. Armed officers also need firearms training and qualification, covered in the 16-hour Armed course. The State of Georgia makes all licensing determinations, so confirm your own situation with the Board.

Q02How much does Private Eye Protection Academy training cost?

Unarmed training is $250, Armed is $375 and the Complete Package is $550. Every course is reserved with a $100 non-refundable deposit in secure Bookeo checkout. The remaining balance, $150, $275 or $450, is paid when you attend. Booking the Complete Package costs $75 less than booking Unarmed and Armed separately.

Q03Is the Unarmed course meant for people new to security?

Yes. The Unarmed course is designed for people new to security work. It starts with patrol, observation, report writing, access control and the legal limits of a security officer's authority, then adds American Red Cross First Aid/CPR/AED certification. Students who complete it successfully receive a Certificate of Completion they can show a licensed employer.

Q04How old do I have to be for armed security training?

You must be 21 or older for armed security work in Georgia, according to the Secretary of State's Board FAQ. The Academy's Armed course and the armed portion of the Complete Package follow that requirement. Check the Bookeo listing for any other date requirements before you place the $100 deposit for a seat.

Q05Does course completion give me a Georgia security license?

No. The Academy provides required training and documentation, but completing a course does not automatically grant a license. Armed registration is tied to a licensed employer, and the State of Georgia makes all licensing determinations. Ask the Board or your prospective employer what else your application needs after training.

Q06Is First Aid and CPR included in every course?

First Aid/CPR/AED is included in the Unarmed course and the Complete Package only. Both include American Red Cross First Aid/CPR/AED certification once that portion is completed. The 16-hour Armed course is firearms-focused and does not include CPR, and the Academy does not sell a separate CPR class.

Q07Can I train with the Academy if I live outside Gwinnett County?

Yes. Students from Fulton, Cobb and other counties attend the same Duluth classroom. The county and city guides on this site explain how to plan the trip from different parts of metro Atlanta. Use live Google Maps directions from your own address at the hour you would leave for class.

Q08How do I reserve a seat in a class?

Choose Unarmed, Armed or Complete, open the secure Bookeo booking page and pick an available date. Pay the $100 non-refundable deposit to hold your seat, and Bookeo emails your confirmation. Bring the balance to class. If you are unsure which course fits, call the Academy line at 678-878-3152 before booking.
